From the Lab to the Marketplace - Why protect University Inventions?

Abstract:
Initially, basic aspects regarding research collaborations with external parties will be briefly explained/re-capitulated. The main part of the seminar is aimed at defining the term "invention" and at explaining the motivation / the reasons for patenting at the University. Some insight into intellectual property rights and more specifically patent rights will be given and a few examples of successful transfers of university technologies to the industry - including university spin-offs - will be presented.
